Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is rallying his top advisors for an emergency strategy session in response to President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to slap a hefty 25% tariff on all Canadian imports to the U.S. The proposed tariff, announced via Trump’s social media platform, aims to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking, while prioritizing domestic job growth and manufacturing.
The Guardian first reported Trudeau’s swift call for an emergency meeting following Trump’s Tuesday announcement. Trump declared that the tariffs would take effect immediately upon his inauguration, staying in place until what he described as the “invasion of drugs, particularly fentanyl, and illegal aliens” is resolved. “I will sign all necessary documents,” Trump stated, reiterating his campaign pledge to put America first in trade and border security.

Despite the looming trade standoff, Trudeau remained optimistic after speaking with Trump directly. “We talked about how the intense and effective connections between our two countries flow back and forth,” Trudeau told reporters, emphasizing mutual cooperation. “We talked about some of the challenges that we can work on together.”
