President Donald Trump’s administration has officially hit Canada with punishing new tariffs after eleventh-hour negotiations between Washington and Ottawa collapsed without a deal.
Beginning at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time Sunday, the United States imposed 50 percent duties on a wide range of Canadian imports, dramatically escalating the trade dispute between the two longtime economic partners.
The tariffs cover roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian goods entering the United States, targeting everything from dairy products and alcohol to furniture, cement, clothing, plywood, plastics, electrical equipment, fishing rods, and hockey gear.
