Progressives are mounting a new campaign to dramatically increase the federal minimum wage, and critics say some of America’s fastest-growing states could bear the brunt of the economic fallout.
A coalition of roughly 100 progressive organizations, with backing from allies of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders, is pushing the Living Wage for All Act, a proposal that would ultimately establish a $25-per-hour federal minimum wage for large employers by 2031.
Supporters are selling the proposal as a major victory for working Americans struggling with higher housing, food, and everyday living costs.
