In a striking move that underscores the anxiety among some Democratic lawmakers, New York State Senator Liz Krueger is exploring extraordinary measures to counter the possibility of Donald Trump’s re-election. As chair of the powerful Senate Finance Committee, Krueger is proposing ideas that range from withholding federal taxes to advocating for northeastern states to align with Canada in defiance of Trump’s policies.
According to Politico, Krueger acknowledges that her suggestions—such as refusing to send over $300 billion in federal taxes or seeking a union with Canada—are unconventional. Yet, the Manhattan Democrat insists that such drastic steps are justified in light of Trump’s proposed policies, including mass deportations of undocumented immigrants and threats to financially punish states that refuse to comply.

“It’s not unreasonable to think outside of the box,” Krueger stated, as she called on Albany lawmakers to consider bold measures in the face of what she views as severe threats from a potential Trump administration.
