A rapidly escalating confrontation in the Middle East is now pulling in a growing list of global players, as more than 20 nations have stepped forward following President Donald Trump’s call to secure one of the world’s most critical energy routes.
The flashpoint is the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow but vital passageway responsible for carrying roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply. With tensions boiling over, the United States has taken aggressive action, striking Iranian positions with massive 5,000-pound bombs in an effort to neutralize threats to international shipping.
Iran’s response stunned military observers and raised alarm bells across Europe.
In a dramatic and unexpected move, Tehran launched two long-range ballistic missiles targeting a British military installation on Diego Garcia, a remote island in the Indian Ocean located nearly 2,500 miles from Iranian territory. The strike shattered previous assumptions about Iran’s missile reach.
One of the missiles malfunctioned mid-flight. The second was successfully intercepted by a U.S. warship before impact. Still, the message was clear: Iran’s capabilities may be far more advanced than previously believed.
