WATCH:
These brief meetings ensure the Senate never hits the 10-day threshold required for the president to act unilaterally.
So instead of forcing the Senate to do its job and confirm Trump’s 150+ pending nominees, Thune has instead handed Democrats exactly what they wanted: delay and dysfunction.
President Trump had made it clear he wanted the Senate to stay in session until his slate of appointees were confirmed. With America in need of a functioning judiciary and federal bureaucracy, this was hardly an unreasonable request. But instead of heeding the call, Thune folded.
The Senate adjourned for recess with dozens of crucial positions left unfilled—many stuck in committee or waiting for cloture votes. Even prominent nominees, such as Judge Jeanine Pirro for U.S. Attorney in D.C., were among the few to advance, while the rest were left hanging.
Among the roughly 150–160 nominations still pending are more than a dozen district court judges, U.S. attorney candidates, and key federal agency roles. All of them were primed for appointment—had the Senate actually recessed.
But Thune’s procedural move ensured Trump’s hands are tied.
This isn’t the first time conservatives have raised eyebrows at Thune’s actions. Many recall his statement from November 10, 2024, when he told reporters, “I intend to work closely with President Trump to confirm the most qualified, conservative nominees to the federal bench and beyond.”
Yet here we are, less than a year later, watching Thune do exactly the opposite. Rather than confronting Democrat obstruction, he’s joined them in undermining the president’s agenda.
Some are even comparing this to the kind of sabotage previously seen from Mitch McConnell—a strategy that gives lip service to conservative values while quietly enabling the administrative state.
The implications are serious. With the 2024 election having delivered Trump a mandate to clean house and restore order, every day that his nominees are blocked is a win for the swamp.
Conservatives are now urging grassroots voters to contact their senators and demand accountability.
“This is betrayal, plain and simple,” one D.C. insider told Trending Politics News. “Thune knows exactly what he’s doing—and it’s not helping President Trump.”
With the Senate set to remain in this faux-session through August, the battle for control of the federal government continues—not just against the Democrats, but within the GOP itself.
