In a moment that sent shockwaves through Washington, newly appointed FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary made a bold accusation against the National Institutes of Health (NIH), claiming the agency was directly involved in financing the lab responsible for creating the deadly COVID-19 virus. Speaking to NewsNation’s Connell McShane, Makary pulled no punches, holding the NIH accountable for one of the greatest global health catastrophes in modern history.
Makary didn’t tiptoe around his frustration with how the NIH had been operating. He slammed the agency for wasting public funds on trendy pet projects instead of focusing on serious science. Among the most egregious missteps, he said, was the NIH’s support of the now-infamous lab believed to have engineered the virus that would go on to kill over 20 million people worldwide.
Dr. Makary said:
“The way it used to be. We’re planning to change our health agencies for a generation or longer. Look at the NIH. When J. Bhattacharya came in there, it was a mess. Fourteen percent of the grants were descriptive studies on health equity.”
“And the NIH had just funded a lab that brewed up a virus that killed 20 million people worldwide. So they’re getting back to studying root causes, a cure for cancer, debilitating neurodegenerative diseases, and they’re going to do good work.”
