Pope Leo XIV reminded the world that even from the heart of Vatican City, a true South Sider never forgets where he came from.

During his weekly audience at St. Peter’s Square, the first American pope was in the middle of greeting thousands when a voice rang out from the crowd: “Go Cubs!”
Without missing a beat, Pope Leo XIV snapped back, “Han perdido!” — then, for emphasis, added in English: “They lost!”
The moment, captured by Vatican Media, went viral almost instantly. Chicago fans around the world erupted — because while the pontiff may now lead 1.4 billion Catholics, his Chicago White Sox loyalties are as strong as ever.
A Holy Rivalry From the South Side
The timing of the Pope’s jab couldn’t have been sharper. Just days earlier, the Cubs were eliminated from the playoffs by the Milwaukee Brewers after a crushing Game 5 defeat. They scraped together a single run in the final matchup and went 5-for-40 with runners in scoring position throughout the series — brutal numbers that every Chicago fan felt deep in their soul.
And yet, even as the White Sox limped through a dismal 102-loss season, Pope Leo XIV — born Robert Francis Prevost in Dolton, Illinois — couldn’t resist rubbing it in.
