Trump then unveiled what he called the next phase of his administration’s pressure campaign.
“Therefore, today, I am announcing the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY! This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale.”
The president painted a bleak picture of Iran’s current position, claiming that its military capabilities and industrial infrastructure had been severely damaged while its economy continued to deteriorate.
“Their navy is gone, their air force is destroyed, their military factories are now rubble, their currency is worthless, and their country is hanging by a thread.”
But Trump’s announcement went beyond direct action against Iran.
He also issued a warning to foreign governments, businesses, financial institutions, airports, and other entities that may provide Tehran with access to money, trade, transportation, or other forms of economic support.
“Today, I am also announcing that ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences.”
The declaration signals an effort to tighten pressure not only on Iran itself but also on the international networks that could potentially help the regime bypass economic restrictions.
Trump specifically identified a range of activities that his administration wants halted, including oil smuggling, financial transfers, exchange operations, shipping arrangements, and the use of front companies.
“Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies — It all needs to stop NOW. You know who you are. This will be an ECONOMIC D-DAY, and we need all of our Allies to stand with the United States of America to isolate, and defeat, the Iran threat.”
The use of the phrase “ECONOMIC D-DAY” underscored the aggressive nature of Trump’s message. Rather than announcing a limited sanctions package, the president framed the operation as a broad campaign designed to cut off the channels Iran could use to sustain its government and project influence abroad.
Trump also called on American allies to support the effort, arguing that a coordinated international response is necessary to further isolate the Iranian regime.
The president ended his statement by declaring that the measures would target Iran’s ability to support terrorism and once again reiterated his longstanding position that Tehran must never obtain a nuclear weapon.
“These maniacs are on the ropes, and these HISTORIC MEASURES will cripple them and their ability to project terror worldwide. IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. President DONALD J. TRUMP”
Trump’s announcement represents a significant escalation in economic pressure and puts foreign governments and private institutions on notice that Washington intends to scrutinize any effort to provide Iran with financial or commercial relief.
The coming response from America’s allies—and from countries that continue to conduct business connected to Iran—could now become a major test of how far the administration’s economic pressure campaign can reach.
For Trump, however, the message was unmistakable: Iran’s window to make a deal has closed, and the administration is preparing to use economic power on a scale the president says will be unlike anything imposed before.
