President Donald Trump says he expects to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later this year, reviving one of the most unusual diplomatic relationships of his presidency and potentially setting the stage for another high-stakes encounter with the nuclear-armed regime.
Trump made the announcement Wednesday while speaking with reporters during a tour of a new helipad being constructed on the White House South Lawn. Asked directly whether he expected to meet Kim, Trump gave a straightforward answer: “Yeah, I will be.”
The president then pointed to his personal relationship with Kim as a key reason he believes renewed diplomacy is possible.
