Board’s Silence Sparks Accusations of Political Bias
So far, the response from the Democrat-led Board of Elections has been silence. In a sharply worded letter to Board Chairman John Currie — who also chairs the Passaic County Democratic Party — Semeraro accused the board of “abdication of responsibility.”
“In an age where almost anything imaginable can be obtained at the click of a button with lightning speed, refusing to employ any and all means necessary to ensure a speedy and accurate election result is nothing short of an abdication of responsibility,” he wrote.
The GOP argues that the board’s unwillingness to act only deepens public mistrust at a time when confidence in elections remains fragile. For years, Passaic County has faced criticism for its slow vote reporting, sometimes taking more than a week after Election Day to finalize results.
Election Integrity or Political Power Play?
Republicans say the push is not about politics but fairness. They believe all New Jersey voters — regardless of party — deserve faster, more transparent election results.
“There is no justification for Passaic County’s failure to engage in the early opening and canvassing of Vote-by-Mail ballots and employing security measures to ensure election integrity,” Semeraro said. “Regardless of political affiliation, New Jerseyans simply deserve to have a speedy and accurate election night.”

Democrats, however, have remained tight-lipped, fueling suspicions among conservatives that partisan motives are driving the resistance to reforms.
Legal Showdown Looming
With the Board refusing to act, GOP leaders are now exploring legal options to compel the county to adopt the proposed security steps. Sources close to the PCRO suggest that a lawsuit could be filed before the end of the month — a move that could set a precedent for how other counties handle ballot security in future elections.
This brewing legal fight comes as the New Jersey governor’s race enters its final stretch. Republican Jack Ciattarelli and Democrat Rep. Mikie Sherrill are neck-and-neck, according to recent polls — raising the stakes for both parties as Election Day nears.
The Bigger Picture
For conservatives, this dispute encapsulates a broader frustration with Democrat election officials nationwide — officials they believe hide behind bureaucracy to resist transparency. To the GOP, Passaic County has become a symbol of everything wrong with the voting system: slow counts, weak oversight, and partisan control over election machinery.
Whether the courts intervene or not, one thing is clear: the battle over ballot integrity in New Jersey is far from over.
