During his confirmation hearing before the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, Turner spoke candidly about his upbringing in Texas and his journey from washing dishes in a BBQ restaurant to playing in the NFL and now serving in the federal government. He made it clear that HUD needs a significant overhaul to better serve the American people.
“We have a housing crisis in our country, where American people and families are struggling every day,” Turner told the committee. “HUD is failing at its most basic mission.”
His nomination received support from only two Democrats, Senators Peter Welch (D-VT) and John Fetterman (D-PA), highlighting the deep partisan divide in Washington. The position was previously held by Dr. Ben Carson during Trump’s first term, and Turner’s leadership is expected to follow a similar policy direction.
Turner emphasized that HUD employees must return to in-office work to ensure efficiency and accountability. He also stressed the need for job creation to help curb homelessness, pointing out that the agency must do more to fulfill its mission of providing safe and affordable housing.
HUD plays a crucial role in developing housing initiatives across the country, allocating billions toward programs that benefit low-income families, the homeless, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities. Over two million families rely on HUD’s assistance, with the agency overseeing 790,000 public housing units nationwide.
In addition to managing public housing, HUD administers mortgage and loan insurance programs, distributes block grants for low-income housing projects, and works to revitalize struggling communities. These initiatives are vital to maintaining economic stability and ensuring access to housing for those most in need.

The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment, a non-profit organization, expressed its willingness to collaborate with Turner to advance housing solutions. The group stated its commitment to working alongside HUD to “achieve our shared vision of thriving communities with affordable homes for all.”
As Turner assumes his new role, his leadership will be closely watched. With the Biden administration’s housing policies drawing criticism for exacerbating affordability issues, the Trump administration’s approach under Turner aims to deliver real, tangible solutions. The success of his tenure will ultimately depend on his ability to enact meaningful reform and restore HUD’s effectiveness in serving the American people.
