U.S. President Donald Trump is once again putting America’s “allies” on notice — and this time, he’s calling out Canada and Europe in one sweeping, headline-grabbing address that has diplomats quietly panicking.
Speaking Wednesday at the World Economic Forum, Trump took direct aim at Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, firing back after Carney delivered a speech that many listeners took as a not-so-subtle jab at the United States.
And Trump didn’t sugarcoat it.
“Canada gets a lot of freebies from us, by the way,” the president said during a wide ranging and lengthy speech. “They should be grateful but they’re not. I watched your prime minister yesterday. He wasn’t so grateful. But they should be grateful to us, Canada. Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”
That’s the kind of quote that instantly travels around the world — and it set the tone for what quickly turned into one of Trump’s most aggressive global messages yet.
The clash started Tuesday when Carney addressed the annual WEF gathering, which routinely hosts political and business elites pushing the same “global cooperation” talking points year after year.
