USAID, established during the Kennedy administration, has been scrutinized for its substantial budget allocations to projects that some argue do not serve core American interests. Critics contend that the agency’s $44 billion budget has often been utilized to interfere in the domestic affairs of other nations and support political groups misaligned with American values.

Louisiana Senator John Kennedy has been vocal about USAID’s contentious spending. He highlighted instances where the agency allocated funds to questionable causes, including providing $10 million in meals to an al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group called the Nusra Front. Additionally, Kennedy pointed out that USAID granted $7.9 million to a project aimed at teaching Sri Lankan journalists to avoid binary gendered language. The agency also invested $1.5 million to promote LGBT advocacy in Jamaica, $3.9 million for LGBT causes in Macedonia, and $8.3 million for equity and inclusion education in Nepal.
