Reinforcements are headed to the progressive wing of the Democratic Party after former Gwinnett County School Board Chairman Everton Blair Jr. staged a dramatic comeback in Georgia’s 13th Congressional District special election.
Blair defeated Marcye Scott, the daughter of late Rep. David Scott, in Tuesday’s runoff to serve out the remainder of the longtime congressman’s term. The Associated Press called the race for Blair, who won after entering the runoff trailing Scott by roughly eight percentage points in the initial round of voting.
With the vast majority of ballots counted, Blair was ahead by approximately 53 percent to 47 percent, according to election reporting. Georgia Secretary of State results reported by local media showed Blair winning 52.46 percent of the vote, compared with Scott’s 47.54 percent.
