This trend has sparked widespread concern among NYC residents, particularly those in Rockaway Beach, where numerous close calls have been reported. The community has been active on social media platforms like Facebook, sharing their encounters and issuing warnings about the ongoing threat.
Further testimonials from the area paint a grim picture of the situation. “It happened to me… in the dark early morning,” shared another Rockaway Beach resident. Another comment from a local mentioned a similar encounter near a 7/11 on Flatbush Avenue just weeks ago. Additionally, a distressing account from May 6 involved a woman recounting how “a man jumped in front of my daughter’s car this morning,” thankfully, she managed to stop in time.

The mechanics of the scam were elaborated on by John B., a retired NYPD officer, during discussions with residents and local law enforcement from the 63rd Precinct. He revealed the coercive tactic employed by the perpetrators: “They’re scaring people saying, ‘You just hit me, and I’m going to report it if you don’t give me the money,'” he said.
A recent survey conducted by Newsweek underscored the perceived impact of illegal immigrants on the city’s crime rates, with over 70% of respondents attributing the rise to this group. Among them, 41% viewed the impact as significant, while another 31% felt it was considerable.

Authorities have tied the surge in such crimes to “asylum seekers” with links to Latin American gangs notorious for their involvement in drug trafficking, human trafficking, and violent activities. Council member Vickie Paladino from Queens was quoted by the Washington Times highlighting the severity of the issue: “What goes on in Third World countries is happening on the streets of New York — every day, any borough, with no consequences.”
This unsettling rise in migrant-related crime is being viewed by some as a direct consequence of the current federal immigration policies under President Biden. Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, critiqued the administration’s handling of asylum and parole policies, suggesting it has led to uncontrolled border crossings and facilitated gang-related activities. “Biden will come up with these just completely chaotic asylum and parole policies, and the next thing you know, we’ve got people flooding across the border,” Stein remarked, implying a link between these policies and the increase in organized crime on the streets of New York.
