In a controversial move, the Biden administration’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deported a 23-year-old mother and her four children—two of whom are newborn U.S. citizens—to Reynosa, Mexico. The deportation followed a missed immigration court hearing in Houston, which the family says occurred due to a medical emergency.
Mother’s Emergency Cesarean Section at the Center of the Case
Cristina Salazar, the young mother at the heart of the case, underwent an emergency cesarean section in early October to deliver twins. As a result, she missed a court date with a Houston immigration judge, which her attorneys argue was a “technical violation” that should not have led to deportation.

“They were treated as if they were high-risk criminals,” one of the family’s attorneys said in a statement, criticizing ICE’s handling of the situation.
