Trump Axes the Penny – ‘Total Waste of Money!’

>> Continued From the Previous Page <<

The financial hit is substantial. In the 2024 fiscal year alone, the U.S. Mint lost an estimated $85.3 million due to penny production. The small copper coins made up a staggering 54 percent of the 5.87 billion coins minted that year, further underscoring the wastefulness of their continued circulation.

A Long-Overdue Reform

Trump’s decision aligns with previous calls to phase out the penny. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been advocating for the elimination of the penny, citing its high cost and limited utility.

“The penny costs over 3 cents to make and cost US taxpayers over $179 million in FY2023,” DOGE posted on X (formerly Twitter).

In 2023, the U.S. Mint produced over 4.5 billion pennies—accounting for nearly 40 percent of all circulating coins. Critics argue that despite the high production numbers, the penny has virtually no purchasing power and is often discarded or left unused.

A Step Toward Fiscal Responsibility

Trump’s move is a strong step toward what he describes as “common sense” government spending. The former president has long championed eliminating wasteful expenditures, and this latest decision reflects his ongoing commitment to cutting unnecessary costs.

While some Americans still feel sentimental about the penny, polling suggests that a majority are ready to move on. A 2022 survey found that 58 percent of Americans would support eliminating the coin, signaling public readiness for the change.

However, completely removing the penny from circulation would likely require congressional approval. Trump’s directive to halt production is a major step, but lawmakers would need to officially retire the coin for good.

The Nickel Problem

Trump’s move also raises questions about the future of other coins, particularly the nickel. Just like the penny, the five-cent coin costs significantly more to produce than its face value—coming in at 13.78 cents per coin in 2024. That year alone, the U.S. Mint lost $17.7 million on nickel production.

If Trump’s penny decision is any indication, further cuts could be on the horizon. With millions of dollars lost annually on coin production, many conservatives argue it’s time for a full reassessment of the country’s currency system.

A Symbolic Yet Significant Change

The penny has been a fixture of American currency since the late 18th century, but as inflation and rising costs render it increasingly obsolete, Trump’s decision to cut production represents a shift toward modernizing U.S. currency.

While his directive will undoubtedly spark debate, it aligns with his broader mission to reduce government inefficiency and put taxpayer dollars to better use. Whether Congress will follow suit remains to be seen, but Trump’s latest move is a clear signal that wasteful spending won’t be tolerated under his leadership.

As the fight over the penny continues, one thing is certain—Trump is taking the battle for fiscal responsibility down to the very last cent.
