In an investigation that many see as politically driven, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, a Democrat, is now examining former President Donald Trump’s recent remarks about former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, claiming that his comments could be interpreted as a potential threat.

During an appearance on “Sunday Square Off,” Mayes openly admitted to having her criminal division chief review Trump’s words. “I have already asked my criminal division chief to start looking at that statement, analyzing it for whether it qualifies as a death threat under Arizona’s laws,” Mayes stated. Despite not yet reaching a conclusion, she added that Trump’s words were “not helpful” as the state prepares for upcoming elections, prioritizing safety and calm at polling locations.

The attorney general’s office confirmed to NBC News that the investigation was underway. A spokesperson for Mayes, Richie Taylor, said that the criminal division is “looking into” the legality of Trump’s comments under Arizona law, although the Trump campaign has not publicly responded to the inquiry.
