Thirteen American service members are now gone—killed during Operation Epic Fury—and their deaths are sending shockwaves across the country. But instead of unity or reflection, a familiar voice from the left has reignited outrage with comments many are calling deeply offensive and dangerously out of touch.
Former MSNBC host Joy Reid—who lost her show after a dramatic ratings collapse—has once again stirred controversy. This time, she’s drawing comparisons between the United States and Iran that critics say cross a line most Americans would never approach.
A Stunning Comparison While Conflict Unfolds
During a March 11 appearance on the One54 Africa podcast, Reid offered her take on America’s role in the world—while U.S. forces were actively engaged in military operations targeting Tehran.
“Our regime has secret police. They have secret police,” she said.
“Our regime is oppressing women, taking away abortion rights, taking away women’s rights in like 26 states,” she continued.
Her conclusion raised eyebrows: “So, we’re marginally better. And we’re doing it for Christianity. They’re doing it for Islam, right?”
That framing—equating the United States with a regime widely known for authoritarian control—immediately sparked backlash. Critics argue that reducing the differences between America and Iran to a matter of religious motivation ignores the stark reality of life under Tehran’s rule.
Reid didn’t stop there. She also claimed Iran has the “highest rate” of women participating in STEM fields, presenting it as a point in the country’s favor.
