18 Years to Replace Ukraine’s Weapons?

If you’re in the defense industry, there’s reason to celebrate this holiday season: a massive order backlog to rebuild America’s weapons stockpile, thanks to ongoing transfers to Ukraine. But for those concerned with U.S. national security, it’s a grim reality check. It may take 18 years to replenish some key defense systems.

A study by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) warns that the heavy flow of military aid to Ukraine is depleting critical U.S. weapons inventories. This warning, issued back in January 2023, came even before additional large-scale transfers of arms later in the year.

One of the most alarming findings from the CSIS report is the situation with the FIM-92 Stinger missile systems. These shoulder-fired air defense systems, which Raytheon describes as “a lightweight, self-contained air defense system that can be rapidly deployed by ground troops,” are in short supply.
