For years, Skip Bayless made it his mission to smear the name “Redskins” as racist, outdated, and unacceptable. Now, in a turn that’s leaving jaws on the floor, Bayless is admitting he misses the very name he once crusaded against.
When George Floyd’s death sent corporate America into overdrive, companies scrambled to prove their social justice credentials — and that meant targeting long-standing institutions like the Washington Redskins. FedEx, which had shelled out millions for stadium naming rights, suddenly decided the name was too offensive to associate with. Nike scrubbed all team gear from its site. Amazon, Walmart, and Target quickly followed suit.
For years, team owner Dan Snyder held his ground. “NEVER,” he told USA Today when asked about a name change. But when corporate partners start yanking funding, even the most ironclad principles begin to buckle.
By mid-2020, Snyder folded. The iconic name was scrapped, replaced temporarily with the uninspired “Washington Football Team” before eventually morphing into the “Washington Commanders” in 2022 — a name so sterile it might as well have come from a marketing whiteboard.
