Vatican Confirms: Pope Francis ‘Critical’

>> Continued From the Previous Page <<

Pneumonia Diagnosis and Medical Uncertainty

Francis’ hospitalization marks the first time in his 12-year papacy that his health has reached such a critical stage. Though Vatican officials initially struck an optimistic tone, renowned surgeon Sergio Alfieri delivered a sobering assessment. “Is the pope out of danger? No. Both doors are open. Is he at risk of immediate death? No. The therapy needs time to work,” he told reporters Friday.

The greatest looming threat is sepsis, a dangerous blood infection that can arise as a complication of pneumonia. “Sepsis, with his respiratory problems and his age, would be really difficult to get out of,” Alfieri warned. So far, doctors have found no signs of sepsis, but they remain on high alert. “He is not out of danger,” said Dr. Luigi Carbone, the pope’s personal physician. “So like all fragile patients, I say they are always on the golden scale: In other words, it takes very little to become unbalanced.”

Ailing Pontiff Cancels Public Events

Doctors have urged the pope to observe “complete rest,” leading to the cancellation of all public engagements. On Saturday, the Vatican announced that Francis would be unable to deliver his weekly Angelus prayer—only the third time he has missed it in his tenure.

Despite his worsening condition, Francis has remained active behind closed doors. Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni confirmed that the pope has continued working, signing off on official decisions and maintaining regular contact with clergy members. During his hospital stay, he has maintained daily phone calls with Rev. Gabriel Romanelli and Father Yusuf Asad in Gaza, a continuation of his close involvement since the war in Gaza erupted following the October 7, 2023, attacks in Israel.

Health Risks and Previous Complications

Francis has long been vulnerable to respiratory infections. As a teenager, he suffered a severe bout of pneumonia that led to the removal of one of his lungs. In 2023, he was hospitalized with bronchitis. Recent months have also seen him suffer two falls, leaving his arm in a sling.

His frailty has raised concerns over his ability to continue leading the Catholic Church. Vatican insiders note that while the pope’s determination remains strong, his body is increasingly struggling to keep up. “He knows he’s in danger,” Alfieri admitted. “And he told us to relay that.”

Visits and Support for the Pontiff

While the pope’s closest aides have been by his side, external visits have been limited. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spent 20 minutes with him on Wednesday. “We joked as always. He hasn’t lost his proverbial sense of humor,” she said in a statement.

For now, Francis’ fate remains uncertain. As doctors monitor his condition closely, the Vatican—and millions of faithful worldwide—hold their breath, hoping for a recovery while preparing for the worst.
