Pope Francis remains in critical condition following a severe respiratory crisis that required urgent medical intervention. The Vatican confirmed Sunday that the 88-year-old pontiff, who has been hospitalized for over a week, suffered an “asthmatic respiratory crisis of prolonged magnitude,” necessitating high-flow oxygen therapy.

The pope was initially admitted to a Rome clinic on February 14 with a respiratory tract infection. Days later, a pneumonia diagnosis was confirmed after CT scans revealed an infection in both lungs. Doctors also discovered signs of anemia, leading to blood transfusions.

Despite the grave health concerns, the Vatican emphasized that Pope Francis is “alert” and spent much of Sunday seated in an armchair. However, his condition has deteriorated. “He is in more pain than yesterday,” the Vatican stated, casting fresh doubt over his recovery.
