U.S. Prepares Big Move Against Castro Regime

According to multiple reports, the United States is now weighing criminal charges against former Cuban strongman Raúl Castro over the deadly 1996 attack that shocked the Cuban-American community and left four men dead in international airspace.

Federal officials familiar with the matter say prosecutors are exploring whether Castro can be held criminally responsible for the shootdown of two civilian aircraft belonging to the humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue. The nonprofit organization, based in Miami, had become well known for searching for Cuban refugees stranded at sea while also challenging the Castro regime through pro-democracy activism.

The incident remains one of the most explosive confrontations between the United States and communist Cuba in modern history.

On February 24, 1996, Cuban MiG fighter jets blasted two small unarmed Cessna planes out of the sky north of Cuba. The aircraft were flying missions tied to Brothers to the Rescue when the Cuban military intercepted and destroyed them.

All four men aboard were killed.
