President Donald Trump erupted in frustration Friday after the Supreme Court dealt a major blow to one of his signature economic weapons. In a sharply worded response, Trump blasted the justices who voted to strike down his tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and accused the Court of being influenced by outside forces.
The ruling came in a 6 to 3 decision. Chief Justice John Roberts joined Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch along with the Court’s three liberal members to block the administration’s use of IEEPA to impose certain tariffs. The majority opinion did not address the billions of dollars already collected under the tariff structure.
The decision immediately triggered a fierce reaction from Trump, who made clear he sees the ruling not as a setback, but as a political move that oversteps constitutional boundaries.
“It is my opinion that the court has been swayed by foreign interest and a political movement that is far smaller than people would ever think,” President Trump said.
The president did not offer specific examples when pressed by reporters to clarify his claim about “foreign interest.” But he made it clear he believes the ruling protects foreign governments more than American workers.
