In a decision that stunned many supporters of President Donald Trump, the Court blocked his use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, known as IEEPA, to impose sweeping tariffs on foreign imports tied to national emergencies. Chief Justice John Roberts sided with the Court’s liberal bloc, along with Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch, invoking the “major questions doctrine” to strike down the administration’s trade measures.
But Justices Brett Kavanaugh, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito forcefully dissented. Their message was clear: the majority is tying the President’s hands at a time when America faces serious foreign threats.
President Trump’s Tariff Strategy Under Fire
After returning to office in 2025, President Trump declared national emergencies over the deadly drug crisis and what he described as the “hollowing out” of American manufacturing. Citing massive trade deficits and the flood of fentanyl and other narcotics entering through Canada, Mexico, and China, the administration used IEEPA to impose tariffs.
The policy included 25 percent duties on most Canadian and Mexican imports, 10 percent on Chinese goods connected to the drug crisis, and at least 10 percent tariffs on imports from numerous trading partners to rebalance trade.

The Supreme Court should have term limits without any exception. There needs to be a turnover every 6 years. Having Unlimited time is unexcusable.
