Disaster Strikes Mayor’s First Public Address

Seattle’s new mayor, Katie Wilson, faced a rocky introduction to the city this week during her first State of the City address. What was meant to showcase her vision quickly became a spectacle after technical problems and visible uncertainty drew sharp criticism from observers.

Wilson, who has held office for just six weeks, began the speech by greeting attendees and acknowledging the marathon of remarks ahead.

“Good morning. How are you all doing today? OK. Are you ready for this? I don’t think I’ve ever talked for as long as I’m about to talk, so we’ll see how it goes,” she told the audience, a line that quickly set a tentative tone.
