CNN’s latest primetime panel turned into an uncomfortable moment for Democrats when Republican commentator Scott Jennings pushed back—hard—against a narrative that’s been building for weeks. The network invited former Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Xochitl Hinojosa to defend a new political video starring several Democrat lawmakers. But when she was asked to name one “illegal order” supposedly issued by President Donald Trump, the entire premise fell apart right on live television.
The controversy began after Democratic Sen. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan appeared in a video alongside five other Democrats who once worked in military or intelligence roles. Their message was aimed at urging service members and intelligence personnel to ignore “illegal” orders from Trump—an extraordinary accusation with extraordinary implications.
Yet when CNN brought the topic to the panel, something major was missing: evidence. Slotkin herself had already struggled on ABC’s “This Week,” where Martha Raddatz asked her to identify a single illegal order. She couldn’t.
On “CNN NewsNight,” Jennings wasted no time holding Democrats to their own accusations. The exchange began when Hinojosa complained about the FBI conducting interviews with Slotkin and others involved in the video. Jennings stopped her mid-talk to cut through the rhetoric.
