Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani are facing criticism after cameras captured the two progressive politicians laughing together during Friday’s solemn 9/11 remembrance ceremony at Ground Zero.
The images quickly attracted attention because of when they were taken: while relatives of those murdered on September 11, 2001, were continuing the deeply emotional tradition of reading the victims’ names aloud.
For many Americans, the optics were difficult to ignore.
