Thune: “Two Dems Just Defected!”

>> Continued From the Previous Page <<

“Well, we’re only stuck as long as a handful of Democrats decide they want to follow the leader and play politics rather than do the right thing on behalf of the American people and open up the government. That’s where we are,” Thune told Fox News host Harris Faulkner.

Thune explained that the Republican conference now has 55 votes locked in, thanks to the two additional Democrats who are ready to join the effort. “We have 55 of 100 United States senators voting to reopen the government. We need five more Democrats. It takes 60 to do most things in the United States Senate, and all we need is five Democrats. But their leadership is intent on on pacifying and trying to appease this far-left base,” he added.

According to Thune, Schumer and Democrat leadership are deliberately stalling any resolution to the crisis. He pointed to an upcoming progressive rally as a key reason Democrats are hesitating. “They’ve got this big rally coming up next Saturday, which everybody thinks they want to get behind them before they do anything to open up the government. But it’s really straightforward. I mean, this is the legislation right here; it’s 24 pages long, it is clean, it is nonpartisan, it has no policy riders, no partisan gimmicks. This is a straightforward way to open up the government.”

Thune declined to name the two Democrats who are now leaning toward backing the funding measure, likely to avoid giving Schumer’s team time to pressure them back into line. But the growing number of defectors is hard to ignore, and it suggests Democrats are feeling the heat as public frustration mounts.

Republican leaders have openly accused Schumer of dragging out the shutdown for political reasons rather than negotiating in good faith. According to GOP lawmakers, Schumer is waiting for the coordinated “No Kings” demonstrations scheduled for October 18—highly publicized protests backed by Soros-linked groups like Indivisible. Democrats and their allies in the media are reportedly hoping to use the demonstrations as political leverage to rally their base and shift the blame for the shutdown onto Republicans.

Behind closed doors, Republican aides say several moderate Democrats are growing increasingly uncomfortable with Schumer’s obstruction. Pressure from voters back home—especially in swing states—appears to be playing a major role in these quiet defections. The party leadership’s refusal to advance a clean funding bill is being viewed by some as a dangerous gamble heading into a contentious election year.

The Senate is scheduled to vote on the continuing resolution later today for the ninth time since the shutdown began. With the margin narrowing and more Democrats showing signs of wavering, Schumer may soon be facing a rebellion from within. If just five more Democrats cross the aisle, the stalemate could end and the government could reopen within hours.

For now, all eyes are on the handful of Democrats who must decide whether to keep toeing the party line—or side with Republicans to get the government back up and running.

  1. It looks like some people in the Democratic party are beginning to see the light because they realize when they come up for reelection, they will most likely get re-elected if they vote to open the government along with the Republicans.
Failing to vote to open the government is a Surefire way for no re-election for all of the ones that want to continue siding with Sorry Schumer in keeping the government closed..
The Democrats are talking and taking notes for what will happen in future elections because they will remember the shutdown and the havoc it has cause and the hardships for many families.
Schumer is making the biggest mistake of his career.
