Thune’s remarks reflect a sentiment that has divided Republicans in recent years. While Trump’s 2024 campaign has centered on promises of decisive action to “end the chaos” at the border, Thune’s pragmatic tone highlights the complexities of executing such plans. The South Dakota senator underscored the importance of respecting America’s laws while acknowledging its identity as a nation of immigrants.
“People have to understand that we are a nation of immigrants, but we are first and foremost a nation of laws, and you’ve got to follow the law,” he said. Thune’s comments suggest that any successful immigration overhaul must strike a balance between compassion and enforcement—a stance that may put him at odds with Trump’s base.
During his presidential campaign, Trump vowed to implement the “largest deportation effort in American history,” framing it as a necessary step to protect American livelihoods and security. His rhetoric has resonated with conservatives frustrated by what they perceive as a lack of enforcement under President Biden’s administration.
Trump’s promises have also reignited debate over the resources required to deport millions of individuals and whether such measures align with America’s broader values. While some Republican leaders have rallied behind Trump’s proposals, others, like Thune, appear more cautious about the logistical and political challenges they entail.
Thune’s ascent to Senate Majority Leader marks a pivotal moment for the Republican Party. Following a decisive victory over rivals Senators Rick Scott and John Cornyn, Thune succeeded Mitch McConnell, bringing an end to McConnell’s nearly two-decade tenure.
Although Thune’s leadership has been seen by some as a shift toward a more centrist Republican agenda, others remain skeptical of his record. Known for his support of foreign wars and his past resistance to Trump’s influence within the GOP, Thune’s rise has raised questions about the party’s direction.

Despite these concerns, Thune has expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with Trump to advance a shared agenda. After his election, he revealed that he had spoken with the former president and was “excited to get to work implementing [his] agenda on behalf of the American people.”
As Thune formally assumes his leadership role, the GOP faces significant challenges in uniting its diverse factions. Trump’s immigration plans will likely serve as a litmus test for how the party navigates ideological differences in the coming months. Whether Thune’s cautious pragmatism or Trump’s bold ambitions will define the Republican platform remains to be seen.
For now, Thune’s remarks underline the complexity of immigration reform and the high stakes involved. His tenure as Senate Majority Leader promises to be closely watched by both allies and critics within the party, as conservatives brace for the battles ahead.

We all knew Thune was a RINO and will continue to be a thorn in President Trump’s plans. I cannot understand why he was placed in that position. Need to find a way to remove him from that post and put a true American in that job. As for illegals. Yes deport the criminals first, then anyone that is getting any free stuff. I’m tired of my tax dollars going to free loaders. We have veterans that need help, but illegals are pampered with my dollars. No money for Americans but money for criminals.
It was never said by anybody that this was going to happen overnight and it will not be a perfect plan
but for every single person sent back will save this country thousands of dollars a year.It will be a slow process altough I think it will be quicker then many expect.Think of how much money has been given to every illegal
so far. It’s been billions why our own poor have received nothing at all.Anyone dumb enough to think this is going to happen overnight are delusional. It took them 4 years to do this damage and it’s going to take atleast a couple to fix it.
I don’t know Thune nor do I want to but if we get rid of half the illegals in the first year it will save the country billions of dollar. This was not created in a year and it won’t be resolved in a year but we have to start somewhere. The most important part of this is we will reduce millions a year just by stopping future illegals before they get here.
