A fresh fracture inside the Republican Party just burst into the open, and it is getting ugly fast.
What had been simmering tension behind closed doors spilled into full public view Friday after John Rose took direct aim at Senate leadership. The Tennessee lawmaker didn’t hold back, openly calling for John Thune to relinquish his leadership role following a controversial deal that ended the Department of Homeland Security shutdown.
“We should call on Thune to step aside,” Rose said in an interview, marking a stunning escalation in intra-party criticism and one of the clearest signs yet that frustration among conservatives is boiling over.
Thune, who only assumed the role of Senate Majority Leader earlier this year, is now facing backlash from within his own ranks at a moment when party unity is already under strain.
Shutdown Deal Triggers Conservative Backlash
At the center of the conflict is a deal that brought an end to a 42-day partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security. While the agreement restored funding for key agencies, it notably left out additional resources for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol.
