Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass finds herself under fire yet again, this time over a controversial memo that has disappeared from a city website. The memo, penned by Fire Chief Kristin Crowley, painted a grim picture of the Los Angeles Fire Department’s (LAFD) deteriorating conditions and its struggle to meet growing emergency response demands.

This scandal comes hot on the heels of reports alleging Bass intended to fire Crowley after she criticized insufficient funding for the fire department. Now, with over 12,000 buildings destroyed, 40,000 acres scorched, and 24 lives lost due to wildfires, the spotlight on Bass’ leadership is only intensifying.

A Warning Ignored
The now-deleted memo, dated November 18, was addressed to the city’s fire commissioners, a board directly appointed by Bass. In it, Chief Crowley issued a dire plea for better funding and resources, warning of the fire department’s inability to keep up with the city’s growing emergency needs.
