A brand-new survey from Leger360 is stirring up controversy across the political landscape. Conducted between August 29 and 31, 2025, the poll suggests California Governor Gavin Newsom is in the lead for the 2028 presidential race. But the numbers are already under fire for being misleading and slanted toward Democrats.
Polling Puts Newsom Ahead — On Paper
The Leger survey tested Newsom against several potential Republican contenders: Vice President JD Vance, former President Donald Trump, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. On the surface, the California governor edged out all three. The poll shows Newsom up 48 to 44 over Trump, 47 to 46 over Vance, and 49 to 44 over Rubio.
At first glance, these numbers look like a win for Democrats. But the fine print tells a different story. The poll carries a margin of error of 3.1 percent, meaning every one of these supposed leads could vanish instantly.
