Jack Smith, the Department of Justice (DOJ) prosecutor who spearheaded two controversial federal criminal cases against President-elect Donald Trump during his re-election campaign, has officially resigned. The announcement came on Friday, with Smith stating that he would be “winding down” the remaining legal efforts following Trump’s re-election victory.

Smith had been seeking permission to release a “final report” summarizing his investigation into Trump. However, Judge Cannon has thus far blocked the report, citing significant constitutional issues with Smith’s appointment as a special prosecutor.
