A sharp divide erupted on Capitol Hill this week after the House passed a Republican-led resolution honoring America’s law enforcement officers while condemning anti-police rhetoric and “defund the police” activism that many conservatives argue has fueled rising dangers for officers nationwide.
The measure, introduced by Zach Nunn, passed with overwhelming Republican support. But the headline-grabbing moment came when 173 House Democrats voted against it, while only 29 Democrats crossed party lines to support the resolution.
The vote immediately sparked backlash from conservatives, especially because it came during National Police Week, a time traditionally dedicated to recognizing officers killed in the line of duty and honoring those who continue protecting communities across the country.
Republicans framed the vote as a revealing moment for Democrats who have spent years trying to distance themselves from the “defund the police” movement while still appeasing progressive activists pushing anti-law enforcement policies.
Nunn told Fox News he believed the measure should have received support from both parties.
