A decorated Marine veteran carrying legally may have prevented a bloodbath in Massachusetts after a convicted felon allegedly unleashed dozens of rifle rounds in broad daylight before being stopped by police and an armed civilian.
Authorities say the terrifying chaos unfolded Monday afternoon near Memorial Drive in Cambridge, where witnesses watched in horror as a gunman openly fired round after round while drivers scrambled for cover and law enforcement rushed to stop the attack.
According to the Cambridge Police Department, officers were first alerted around 1 p.m. after Boston Police warned them about an armed man behaving erratically in the area. What followed quickly escalated into what investigators described as an “active shooter scene.”
Massachusetts State Police arrived and confronted the suspect alongside a former Marine who was legally carrying a firearm under a concealed carry permit.
What happened next could have turned catastrophic.
“After being confronted, the suspect allegedly continued to fire the weapon striking the State Police Cruiser,” Cambridge police said in the statement.
