New York Attorney General Letitia James has built a reputation around aggressive legal tactics, often targeting political opponents and institutions that fall outside her ideological lane.
Now, that approach appears to have hit a serious roadblock.
The U.S. Department of Justice has stepped in with a firm warning—effectively drawing a legal boundary that could leave James exposed if she chooses to push forward. And looming over the entire dispute is a recent ruling from the Supreme Court of the United States that may already have settled the core issue.
DOJ Steps In as Dispute Escalates
In a sharply worded letter, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche made the federal government’s stance unmistakably clear. He stated that NYU Langone acted within the law when it decided to shut down its Transgender Youth Health Program.
More importantly, Blanche signaled that the DOJ is prepared to back the hospital in court if James follows through on her legal threats.
The program in question had offered puberty blockers and hormone treatments to minors. It was discontinued after warnings from the Trump administration that hospitals continuing such services could risk losing federal funding.
