Doctor Breaks Silence on Last Seconds of Life

For decades, families have stood in hospital rooms as doctors quietly uttered the words no one ever wants to hear: time of death.

Machines go silent. The room shifts. Life, we’re told, has ended.

But groundbreaking research out of New York is forcing the medical community to confront an unsettling possibility: what if the person lying in that bed isn’t entirely unaware?

What if they can still hear you?

A team led by Dr. Sam Parnia at NYU Langone has spent years investigating something most physicians would rather avoid — what actually happens in the minutes after the heart stops. His latest findings, published in the journal Resuscitation, are sending shockwaves through both medicine and philosophy.

The study examined 567 cardiac arrest patients across 25 hospitals in the United States and the United Kingdom. Of those, 53 survived long enough to be interviewed.

What they reported should stop anyone cold.
