In a dramatic turn of events, House Speaker Mike Johnson struck a late-night deal with Democratic leaders on Friday, unveiling a controversial spending package. The agreement, crafted to avert a government shutdown, secures federal funding through March and includes substantial disaster and agricultural relief. However, it excludes a crucial demand from President-elect Donald Trump: a debt ceiling increase, a move Trump and his allies had staunchly advocated.
The 118-page bill preserves current funding levels and allocates $100 billion for disaster relief, alongside $10 billion in agricultural assistance. Yet, it omits Trump’s proposal to either extend or abolish the debt ceiling to prevent future fiscal clashes. Trump has been vocal about the issue, framing it as vital to the “America First Agenda.”
