Conservatives were stunned. A Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney threatening law-abiding gun owners? That sounded more like a Biden-era enforcer than someone defending the Second Amendment.
Even MacCallum seemed to celebrate Pirro’s stance, saying, “Yeah, it’s amazing how accountability works,” as if legal gun owners were criminals by default.
The reaction was immediate. Florida Congressman Greg Steube fired back on X, writing, “I bring a gun into the district every week,” daring Pirro to “come and take it.” Steube holds both Florida and D.C. carry licenses.
Gun rights organizations were equally outspoken. The National Association for Gun Rights called Pirro’s comments “unacceptable and intolerable,” while Gun Owners of America highlighted that concealed carry permit holders are statistically more law-abiding than police officers.
This wasn’t a minor misstep. Pirro effectively threatened Americans with jail for exercising a fundamental right recognized by the Supreme Court in the landmark 2008 Heller decision.
Pirro tried to walk back the backlash on social media, calling herself a “proud supporter of the Second Amendment.”
But she doubled down with a misleading claim: “Washington, D.C. law requires handguns to be licensed in the District with the Metropolitan Police Department to be carried into our community.”
That’s flat-out wrong. Nonresidents can legally obtain carry permits in D.C., and since 2017, the courts have struck down any requirement to prove a “good reason” to carry.
Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie set the record straight: “Non-residents can obtain a permit in DC — don’t ask me how I know,” hinting he carries legally in the city.
Pirro’s comments come on the heels of the Alex Pretti shooting in Minneapolis, which rattled conservatives. Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, was legally carrying a licensed handgun when federal agents shot him during a protest.
Administration officials tried to justify the killing by attacking Pretti’s right to carry. FBI Director Kash Patel claimed, “you cannot bring a firearm loaded with multiple magazines to any sort of protest.” But Minnesota law explicitly allows licensed carry at protests, even inside the state Capitol.
Now, Pirro is adding to the alarm by threatening anyone carrying a firearm in D.C., even with valid out-of-state permits.
The Supreme Court’s Heller ruling in 2008 was a cornerstone victory for conservatives. Justice Antonin Scalia wrote that the Second Amendment “protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense.”
Pirro’s threat to jail law-abiding gun owners flies in the face of that ruling. Even moderate Republicans weighed in, with Senator John Thune reminding everyone that carrying a firearm is “a constitutional right,” and Senator Bill Cassidy noting, “your Second Amendment rights don’t disappear when you exercise your other rights.”
The pattern should worry every gun owner. From Pretti’s shooting to statements from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, and Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino, officials have repeatedly misrepresented lawful gun owners.
Pirro now adds another layer, threatening legal carry in D.C. Amy Swearer of the Heritage Foundation and Republican strategist John Cardillo highlighted the growing hostility: “It’s very scary that so many in the Trump administration have become Second Amendment hostile.”
The NRA chimed in as well, reminding Americans that “your right to self-defense should not end simply because you crossed a state line.”
Pirro’s statements highlight a disturbing trend: even officials aligned with Trump may turn on gun rights. If federal law enforcement can justify killing Alex Pretti or threatening Congressman Steube, no American is safe from arbitrary enforcement.
Erich Pratt of Gun Owners of America summed it up bluntly: “A fundamental constitutional right should not disappear the moment a law-abiding American crosses an invisible border.”
With 2026 midterms approaching, Trump’s team risks alienating a core segment of its base. Voters didn’t elect him to have U.S. Attorneys threatening jail time for carrying firearms legally. Conservatives will be watching closely.
