Colorado Goes WOKE: Misgendering Now a Crime?

In a move that critics say tramples on free speech and weaponizes identity politics, Colorado Governor Jared Polis has signed a controversial new bill into law that effectively criminalizes the act of “misgendering” or “deadnaming” transgender individuals in certain settings.

The legislation, known as the “Kelly Loving Act,” dramatically expands Colorado’s anti-discrimination framework by including specific language that targets anyone who fails to use a transgender person’s preferred name or pronouns in designated environments. The bill, passed under the Democratic majority, now makes such speech punishable in workplaces, schools, and other public accommodations.

The law is named after Kelly Loving, a transgender woman who was tragically killed in the 2022 Club Q mass shooting. While supporters hail it as a step toward protecting transgender rights, many see it as a dangerous step toward criminalizing speech and enforcing ideological conformity.

“The Kelly Loving Act is a beacon of hope to trans people across the country,” said Z Williams, whose law firm supported the legislation. “Our organizing works. Hope is still alive. To be trans is to know how to struggle. We will not stop this work until every trans person is safe and free.”
