Trump quickly turned his attention toward Ossoff, mocking the Georgia Democrat while defending ongoing changes to the White House.
Trump called Ossoff a “Pee Wee Herman lookalike” and argued that the White House renovations were necessary.
“We’re fixing a White House that hasn’t been taken care of,” Trump said.
But the exchange took another turn when Holmes attempted to interject with a question about South Korea before Trump had completed his response.
Trump immediately objected.
“Quiet. Quiet. Quiet!” Trump shouted at Holmes.
The president then criticized the CNN correspondent for continuing to interrupt him, particularly with a young guest standing nearby.
“You’re very disrespectful in front of this young man,” Trump said.
The young guest was 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai, who was being honored at the White House after reportedly helping rescue someone from dangerous surf in California last month.
Rather than allowing the exchange to end there, Holmes continued attempting to ask her question.
Trump responded with another pointed attack.
“You’re a loud, boisterous person. You’re fake news,” Trump said.
He again told Holmes to “be quiet” as the reporter tried to continue the questioning.
The confrontation quickly became a flashpoint online, with supporters of the administration rallying behind Trump and criticizing Holmes for repeatedly speaking over the president.
The tense moment also appeared to irritate White House officials. Outgoing White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt was visibly displeased following the exchange and was seen mouthing something to a colleague.
The White House’s Rapid Response 47 account later escalated the criticism with a harsh statement aimed directly at Holmes.
“Someday, your children will come across your disgusting and inhumane question,” said the official Rapid Response 47 account. “They will be sickened and embarrassed to have a parent be so callous and vindictive. It’s quite troubling.”
The White House also described Holmes as “a disgraceful, humiliating embarrassment to her alleged profession.”
Holmes is a senior White House correspondent for CNN and has spent more than 14 years working for the network. Her clashes with Trump and his administration have drawn attention before, but Monday’s exchange quickly became one of the more heated confrontations of the latest White House press cycle.
At the center of the original question was Harp, one of Trump’s most recognizable aides.
Harp has attracted renewed attention following reports concerning an alleged Iranian assassination threat during the NATO summit in Turkey last month.
According to reports, Harp was among a small number of aides who changed aircraft with Trump on the tarmac in Ankara after Israeli intelligence reportedly warned about a possible threat involving Air Force One.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reportedly remained aboard the original aircraft, along with dozens of members of the press.
Harp has become a highly visible presence around Trump and is frequently seen traveling with him.
She has earned the nickname “human printer” because she reportedly provides the president with printed copies of news stories, social media posts and other information.
Her proximity to Trump has also made her a recurring subject of public discussion. During overseas travel and political events, she has often been seen close to the president, helping deliver information and updates.
In Scotland, Harp was even spotted running behind Trump’s golf cart while carrying information for him.
Sources have described her as part of Trump’s “connective tissue,” reflecting the unusually direct access she reportedly has to the president.
That access was at the heart of Ossoff’s criticism and Holmes’ question Monday.
But what began as a political dispute over Harp and White House renovations quickly became another confrontation between Trump and the mainstream media.
Trump clearly signaled that he was unwilling to let Holmes repeatedly interrupt his response, particularly while a young White House guest stood nearby.
The White House then reinforced that message after the exchange, launching a forceful public defense of the president while attacking the CNN reporter.
For Trump’s supporters, the confrontation was another example of the president refusing to allow reporters to dictate the terms of an Oval Office exchange.
For critics, it was another contentious moment in an increasingly combative relationship between the administration and CNN.
Either way, the confrontation ensured that what began as a question about Natalie Harp quickly became the latest headline-making showdown between Donald Trump and the press.
