The U.S. Senate on Tuesday delivered a closely watched 50–47 vote to move forward a controversial war powers resolution aimed at restricting President Trump’s authority regarding potential military action involving Iran. The narrow outcome immediately set off political shockwaves on Capitol Hill, marking a rare bipartisan split that exposed deep divisions within the Republican Party.
The vote centered on a procedural motion to discharge the resolution from committee, effectively clearing the way for full consideration. While Democrats largely unified behind the effort, a small but significant group of Republicans broke ranks and sided with them, giving the measure unexpected momentum.
Four Republican senators ultimately joined Democrats in supporting advancement of the resolution: Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Rand Paul, and Bill Cassidy. Cassidy’s vote stood out in particular, coming just days after his failed bid to advance to a GOP runoff in Louisiana’s Senate primary. His alignment with Democrats on the measure added fresh political intrigue, especially as former President Trump had backed one of Cassidy’s opponents during what some have described as Trump’s ongoing “RINO revenge tour” against intra-party dissenters.
