President Donald Trump’s campaign to purge Republicans he views as disloyal scored another major victory Tuesday night after longtime Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie was defeated in a heated Republican primary by Trump-backed challenger Ed Gallrein.
The stunning loss marks the end of Massie’s 12-year run in Congress and sends a loud message to Republicans across the country: crossing Trump in today’s GOP comes with serious political consequences.
The race quickly became one of the most closely watched Republican primaries of the year after President Donald Trump publicly targeted Massie as part of what many conservatives have described as Trump’s ongoing effort to remove establishment-style Republicans and lawmakers viewed as obstacles to the America First movement.
