In November, 82-year-old Mitch McConnell will step down as Senate GOP leader.
Wednesday’s announcement is anticipated by McConnell.
“One of life’s most underappreciated talents is to know when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter,” In prepared statements that The Associated Press was able to receive, he stated. “So I stand before you today … to say that this will be my last term as Republican leader of the Senate.”

According to AP:
The Senate leader with the longest tenure in history, Mitch McConnell, will retire in November after almost 20 years of holding onto office despite turmoil within the Republican Party.
Last week, McConnell celebrated his 82nd birthday, and he was ready to make his announcement in the Senate floor on Wednesday. Looking back on his rise from the party’s back benches in 1985 to its front row seat, McConnell’s comfort level has increased.
