Violence once again erupted outside a federal immigration detention center in New Jersey, raising serious questions about whether state officials have truly regained control of a situation that has spiraled for more than a week.
Delaney Hall, a 1,000-bed immigration detention facility in Newark operated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), has become the center of increasingly aggressive demonstrations that show no signs of slowing down. What began as protests over allegations regarding conditions inside the facility has evolved into nightly confrontations between activists and law enforcement.
Governor Mikie Sherrill attempted to project confidence on Friday, announcing that New Jersey State Police would take over security operations surrounding the facility after several days of escalating conflict involving federal officers and demonstrators.
The governor’s plan included the creation of designated protest areas and vehicle checkpoints designed to separate protesters from law enforcement personnel while maintaining access to the facility. State officials also worked with federal authorities to reduce the visible presence of ICE agents in certain areas around the detention center.
But despite those efforts, the promise of restored order quickly collided with reality.
