A shocking security scare at one of Washington’s most high-profile media gatherings is now being followed by an unexpected personal gesture from Donald Trump—one that even his critics are taking note of.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, the president reached out directly to Jonathan Karl, the Chief Washington Correspondent for ABC News, after a frightening shooting disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner the night before. According to Karl, the call came shortly after 7 a.m., with Trump personally checking in to ensure the veteran reporter was safe following the chaos.
“He was calling to see if I was ok with what happened last night,” Karl said, describing the unusual but notable outreach from the president.
The incident that prompted the call unfolded late Saturday evening at the Washington Hilton Hotel, where the annual dinner was being held. Authorities say a 31-year-old suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen of California, approached a secured checkpoint armed with a shotgun and additional weapons. Tensions escalated rapidly when the suspect discharged at least one round, striking a Secret Service agent.
