Residents in Buffalo, New York, are voicing frustration after city officials raised the Somali flag at City Hall just one day after announcing that the city’s traditional Independence Day fireworks celebration would not take place this year.
The timing of the decision quickly became a flashpoint online, with critics questioning why city leaders were celebrating cultural diversity while canceling an event many residents view as a centerpiece of America’s birthday.
The controversy unfolded in downtown Buffalo, where city leaders participated in a ceremony recognizing the local Somali community. Photos and comments from the event were later shared on social media by Fillmore District Council Member Mitch Nowakowski.
